Fairtrade or Fair-washing?
August 20, 2009
We’re astounded at the absolute lack of knowledge of what’s really going on in within the chocolate industry!
Last night’s close up article was a real eye opener for anyone not already in the know. It will be interesting to see how the big corporate respond to this – Already in other parts of the world some have introduced a token Fairtrade offering, whilst still using exploitative cocoa for the bulk of their range.
We call this FAIR-WASHING
If you haven’t already seen it – the Close Up item is below… interesting comments at the end there…

I see lots of products that say they are fair trade but don’t have any certification(other than their own……yeah right) Is this what you call fairwashing?
How do you know if a product is Fairtrade?

Good to see a more detailed debate is opening up on what actually constitutes ‘fair trade’: kudos for Scarborough.
Ultimately, I guess, it’s the economics that will make the change. What a difference it would make if we could move to get major/mass consumers of coffee/tea/chocolate etc. to purchase and sell genuine fair trade produce.
Students at Victoria Uni are moving. They will get there. What about the other unis and polytecs? What about ‘green’ and ‘health’ businesses? Parliament? Police? Clubs like WEAs, RSAs?
Great to see Victoria Uni moving ,lets get them chatting.
